Eagles Complete Day One Of Troy Trojan Jamboree
Troy, Ala. – The Eagles handled Nicholls State 6-1 on the opening day of the Troy Trojan Jamboree. After earning the doubles point, Georgia Southern cruised in singles – taking 5 of 6 matches to earn the victory.
"We played with a lot of energy today and we executed well," said Head Coach Alexander Koning. "I am proud of the way we fought and that the guys implemented what we did in practice. We will enjoy this win, but will also turn our focus to a tough battle tomorrow against Troy."
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Christian Kerrigan and Ristomatti Lanne took care of Adavelly and Karatzas 6-1. Using the momentum on the other courts, the No. 1 tandem of Kyle Hoffman and Nico De Groof was down a break halfway through the set but kept playing aggressive. They got the break back and broke again to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 triumph over Wezeman and Cronin.
Kerrigan was the first to strike for the Eagles at No. 3 singles as he dispatched Adavelly 6-2, 6-4 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles. Commented Koning, "Chris executed the gameplan we worked on and was able to get ahead early and never looked back."
Lanne made it 3-0 Eagles when he took care of Meessen 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position. The match clinching point was earned at the No. 2 position as Albert Codina Sala bounced Karatzas 6-3, 6-3.
"Rise played very solid and so did Albert who clinched the team match," said Koning.
De Groof defeated Cronin 6-7, 7-6, ret at No. 6, and Hoffman beat Sinn at No. 5 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Koning added, "Kyle played well in the first set and his opponent caught on in the second set. Kylce came out aggressive in the third set, got a break and closed it out with another break. Nico played well but unfortunately his opponent had to retire."
Jose Landin suffered the lone setback on the day as he was defeated by Wezeman 3-6, 6-2, 7-8.
The Eagles will return for day two action Saturday when they challenge Troy University in their first Sun Belt Conference Match at 9 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. against South Carolina State.
