Georgia Southern sends lone senior Matthew Mitchell out a winner on Sunday
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis concluded the 2026 regular season with an impressive 4-0 win over Sun Belt Conference foe Coastal Carolina on Senior Day, Sunday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles finish the Spring campaign with a 10-8 mark, while Coastal Carolina falls to 11-10. Georgia Southern will now turn its attention to the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday in Rome, Ga. The bracket will be released on Monday by the league office.
Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead into singles play thanks to a 6-2 win by Albert Saar and Albert Widell at No. 2 doubles, as well as a 6-2 win by Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell at No. 3 doubles.
For Mitchell, the lone senior honored in a pre-match ceremony on Senior Day, it was the 73rd combined singles and doubles win in his four-year career for the Eagles.
In singles, the Eagles then clinched the victory with three straight-set victories. Mirarchi began with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, then Edoardo Santoni followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Albert Widell then earned the clincher with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.
"I think we've been building some good momentum for the past few weeks," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "We've been putting in a lot of good work and I've been demanding a lot out of the guys. I think they saw today that when they're forcing their opponent into tough situations that we're capable of handling a lot. Couldn't be more proud of [graduate assistant coach] Ege and Matt Mitchell, it was a great way to go out."
"A player like Matt means everything to this program," Coach Goodwin said about the senior. "He gives everyone no excuse, he has a work ethic that is second to none. He's willed himself into being one of the best dual match players that Georgia Southern has ever seen and one of the best teammates you could ask for."
