Statesboro, Ga. – From a chilly Wallis Tennis Center, the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team earned a 4-3 win over the Kennesaw State Owls Saturday. After earning the critical doubles point, Jordana Klein, Mary Phillips Smith and Anne Kurzweil beat their opponents at No 1, 2 and 3 singles respectively to earn the team victory.
"The team came out really strong in doubles today and had a lot of great movement at the net," reflected Head Coach Michele Stanford. "Getting that first doubles point was extremely important and helped to get the momentum going in our direction. I am very proud of our girls who had the initiative to step up and get the job done today."
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Daria Vasekina and Francisca Norregaard got the match started in the Eagles favor as they defeated Ashleigh De Wet and Gabriele Bueno 8-4. Moments later, the Owls struck back when Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghause took down Kurzweil and Smith at No. 1 doubles 8-4.
With the doubles point still up from grabs, the No. 3 duo of Klein and Giulia Riepe finished off Alexandra Mercado and Cristina Martin 8-6 to clinch the 1 available doubles point.
Heading in to singles play 1-0 over the Owls, the Eagles knew they needed just 3 of 6 singles results to clinch the team victory.
Kurzweil defeated Isabela Castro at the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-0 to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team. De Wet took down Norregaard 6-3, 6-4 to keep the Owls in it and move the team total to 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Kennesaw State knotted the team score at 2-2 when Martin defeated Vasekina at the No. 5 position 7-5, 6-3. Smith got the lead back for the Eagles 3-2 when they took down Hueckinghaus 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Lone senior Klein, challenging Stein in the No. 2 spot, earned the match winner for the Eagles with a 6-1, 7-5 result.
Rounding out the matches, Riepe fell to Mercada in the No. 4 position 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.
With the 4-3 win, the Eagles move to 4-2 on the season, while the Kennesaw State Owls fall to 0-4.
Sunday's match against South Carolina State has been postponed due to weather, and a make-up date has not yet been announced.
