STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's tennis assistant coach Michele Stanford was promoted to head coach on Sept. 12 as announced by Athletics Director Tom Kleinlein. Stanford will begin her first season at the helm of the Eagles and will lead the program into its first Sun Belt Conference season at the Kennesaw State Invite on Sept.19.
Stanford served as an assistant coach last season for Amy Bonner, who stepped down at the end of July, and helped the program post a 10-11 record with a 4-5 mark in conference play. GSU opened the season with three-straight victories and won six of the last eight matches to close out the 2013-14 campaign.
"Michele did a great job through the search process of selling her strengths and her passion for this program," Athletics Director Tom Kleinlein said. "I look forward to watching her teams compete."
Stanford came to GSU after a standout career at Furman University. During her four-year career with the Paladins, she posted a 39-42 record in singles competition. Stanford was selected as the Southern Conference Sportsmanship Award winner in 2013 and served as a team captain as a senior. She is a native of Canton, Ga.
Stanford graduated in 2013 with a double major in Religion and Health Sciences. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern University.
