Chester Webb Inducted Into Ga. Sports Hall of Fame

Elberton native was Georgia’s first college basketball All-American

MACON, Ga. – A member of the Georgia Southern Hall of Fame since 1959, Chester Webb's addition to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame finally came on Saturday evening.

A native of Elberton, Ga., Webb was the first native Georgian to be named a college basketball All-American.

"I really didn't know what to expect, but the people down here are really nice," said Webb in an interview with the Savannah Morning News. "I'm honored to be inducted into the hall of fame."

Chester played between 1952 and 1956 and is the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,542 career points. In 1956 as a senior, Webb scored 883 points at an average of 30.5 points per game for the best season in school history. For his career, Webb scored 24.0 ppg.

Webb possesses school career records for field goals made (883), free throws made (776) and rebounds (1,685). He tops the single-season list in field goals made (291), free throws made (301) and rebounds (524). Chester holds the school's mark record for consecutive free throws made in a game (21) and season (31).

He authored six of Georgia Southern's top-10 individual scoring games, including a pair of 47-point efforts against Piedmont on Jan. 23, 1956 and Feb. 18, 1956. Webb also scored 45 vs. Stetson on Dec. 1, 1955.

Webb was a First Team NAIA All-American in 1955 and was a Second Team NAIA All-American in 1956.

In 1956 after his senior season, Webb was picked in the NBA Draft by the Syracuse Nationals. Chester, however, chose to serve in the U.S. Army.
