STATESBORO, GA.
– Georgia Southern Men's Basketball fell 66-61 to Elon in the final Southern Conference game at Hanner Fieldhouse. Four Eagles finished in double figures while Elon drained 10 buckets from beyond the arc. Next up for the Southern is a pair of road games to close the 2013-14 campaign.

"It wasn't a very good day for us, but I can't fault the guys' effort," said Head Coach Mark Byington. "Our guys were diving for balls and fighting on every play. Elon took a lot of three-pointers and long shots mean long rebounds. We gave up 12, but I was happy that we got 15 offensive boards of our own."

With the loss, Georgia Southern falls to 12-17 on the season and 5-9 in league play. Elon improves to 17-11 and 10-3 in the SoCon.

Prior to the game, senior Tre Bussey, Marvin Baynham and Brian Holmes were honored for their services to Georgia Southern Basketball.

Georgia Southern had four players scoring in double figures, led by 16 from Bussey in his final game at Hanner Fieldhouse. Jelani Hewitt added 13 points while Brian Holmes made a pair of three-pointers to finish the afternoon with 11 points. Angel Matias rounded out the double-digit Eagles with 10 points.

Baynham, who joined the 500 rebound club earlier this week against Chattanooga, grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds. It was the first time in his career that he recorded double-digit rebounds in back-to-back games.

Lucas Troutman scored 20 points for Elon to lead all scorers. Jack Isenbarger posted 14 while Tanner Samson added 12 points. Overall, Elon went 10-for-28 from beyond the arc.

Elon led most of the day, but the Eagles were able to hold the Phoenix at arm's length, keeping the lead under 10 points throughout the second half. With just under five minutes left, Holmes drained a clutch three-pointer to cut the lead to one. That, however, would be the Eagles' final field goal until Hewitt made a lay-in with five seconds left in the game.

The Eagles travel for their final two road games in the SoCon era, visiting Furman and The Citadel next week to close the regular season. The Eagles are at the Paladins on Thursday at 7 p.m.
