Divers Enjoy Strong Performances Against Clemson

Statesboro, Ga. – The swimming and diving teams took to the RAC Aquatics Center Saturday for their first home meet of the season. The divers did battle with Clemson, while the swimmers had a dual-meet against UNC-Asheville.
The Eagles emerged victorious over the visiting Bulldogs 141-124, and the divers held their own against a formidable opponent in Clemson.
"I'm happy with how we performed today. Overall, we had some good performances, but we still have some things to clean up and work on. Our divers had a really strong showing and keep improving daily," commented Head Coach Nate Kellogg.
The day began with the divers challenging Clemson. In 3 meter diving, Georgia Southern's Emma Weisel finished 2nd with a score of 271.88, while teammate Erin Hembree finished 11th with 209.25 points. The 1 meter diving event saw Weisel finish 6th with 247.50 points and Hembree finish 11th with 209.98 points.
The dual swim meet followed at 1 p.m. against the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs. The meet kicked off with the 400 yard medley relay. The Eagle's "A" team finished 2nd in 4:02.57 and consisted of Megan Liebl, Abbie Lavallin, Madison Lichtefeld and Elaina Lanson. Touching in 3rd in 4:03.69 was the Eagle's "C" team made up of Anna Battistello, Allyn Case, Amber Cortazzo and Kiera McCormack.
It was a clean sweep for the Eagles in the 100 butterfly. Sarah Schwartz won the event in 59.59, Becca Alves finished 2nd in 59.68 and Christina Moran touched 3rd in 59.74.
Lauren Campbell finished 2nd in the 1000 yard free with a time of 10:49.04. The 200 yard free saw a 1-2 Eagles finish as Cortazzo won the event in 1:55.76 and teammate Amber Juncker touched 2nd at 1:56.60.
Not to be outdone, the tandem of Lanson and Battistello combined to finish 1st and 2nd with times of 58.66 and 1:00.68 respectively in the 100 yard backstroke. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Lichtefeld took 2nd in 1:07.19 and Case touched 3rd in 1:09.13.
Megan Heller won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.43. Teammate Katlyn Jones was 2nd finishing in 2:12.49. In the 50 free, Kylee Parsons won with over half a second to spare touching in 24.46. Christina Morgan finished 3rd in the same event finishing in 25.09.
The duo of Lanson and Parsons finished 1-2 in the 100 yard free touching in 51.91 and 53.91 respectively. Lavalin managed a 2nd place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.27. The 500 free saw Cortazzo get the win with a time of 5:10.08 while teammate Hannah Rogers finished in 5:22.19 which was good enough for 3rd.
The Eagles have won their last two dual-meets and will look to carry that momentum to the Wingate Fall Frenzy on Nov. 21-23 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Nike Cup will be Nov. 20-22 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the divers.
