Men’s tennis assistant coach Carlos Oyaga started his career at Georgia Southern University in January, 2013, and is entering his second season with the Eagles. Oyaga is involved in all areas of the program including daily team practices, leading individual skill sessions, foreign and domestic recruiting as well as on court equipment.
“Carlos is a great addition to our tennis program, he has been around many successful programs and that experience and maturity will help our young men learn how to be champions on court and off,” said Zieziula.
In his first season at Georgia Southern, Oyaga assisted in one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation- the Eagles went from a record of 3-20 the previous year to 11-9 in 2013.
Oyaga comes to Georgia Southern from Mars Hill College, where he graduated in May 2012 with a degree in business administration and mathematics. During Oyaga’s time at Mars Hill, the Lions won the South Atlantic Conference Championship in 2009, giving them an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. The Lions also earned an at large bid to the NCAA tournament in 2008.
A four-year letter winner in tennis from 2007-2011, Oyaga was named team captain his senior year.
After finishing his playing career, Oyaga joined the staff for the men’s and women’s tennis teams as a volunteer assistant coach for the spring 2012 season. He also was a tennis counselor at Camp Vega in Maine in the summer of 2012 and has worked as a coach for the junior development program for David Park Tennis Center in Hollywood, Fla.
In his fifth year at Mars Hill, Oyaga joined the men’s soccer team and became part of a team that reached the Sweet Sixteen in 2011, finishing the year ranked 17th in the nation.
