Georgia Southern wraps up non-conference play with a 5-1-2 record; opens Sun Belt play Sunday against Arkansas State

TOLEDO, Ohio - Anna Braziunas' goal in the 81st minute snapped was the match winner as Georgia Southern women's soccer wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 3-2 victory over host Toledo on Sunday afternoon in Toledo, Ohio.

The Eagles improved to 5-1-2 on the season with the win over the Rockets (4-2) in the first meeting ever between the two schools. Georgia Southern will be next in action on Sunday, September 13, hosting Arkansas State in a 1 p.m. Sun Belt Conference contest at Bo Pitts FIeld.

Georgia Southern quickly got on the board in the third minute of the match off of a throw-in deep in Toledo's half. Maya Zmistowski's throw-in went to Kaitlin Cook, who sent it to the left side of the box where Addison Comer's one-touch finish beat Toledo goalkeeper Paige Dornheggen inside the near post for the early 1-0 advantage.

Toledo would take the lead with a pair of goals, beginning with Ella Zoerhoff's rocket shot from outside the box in the 21st minute. Then, off of a corner kick, a scramble in front of the box resulted in McKenna Schultz getting a leg to the ball and poking it in for a 2-1 lead for the home team in the 37th minute.

Anna Braziunas would take advantage of a Toledo miscue in the 43rd minute to send the match into halftime tied. Dornheggen came out of the box to try and head a ball that Addison Comer was challenging, and instead, the ball found the foot of Braziunas, who calmly directed it into the open net for the goal.

Both teams played well defensively to open the second half. Zoerhoff had a free kick chance just outside the box for Toledo in the 78th minute, but her shot hit the wall and the Eagles were able to clear.

The winning goal came off of a long ball sent into the box, where Comer was able to get a touch onto it and send it towards Braziunas, who finished for her second goal of the match and her first collegiate brace.

"We got what we needed out of the road trip," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "We were stretched, but were competitive until the very end against Michigan on Thursday. Then we got the win against a very athletic and pesky Toledo team today. Being 5-1-2 coming out of the non-conference schedule is a great place to be and the team feels we are prepared and excited for SBC play!"

Georgia Southern finished the match with a 13-10 edge in shots. Oakley made three saves in net to earn her first win of the season, while Dornheggen made one save in her first half of action for Toledo in net. Grace Konopatzki played the second half for the Rockets and had two saves. Georgia Southern enjoyed a 6-5 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were whistled for nine fouls and four offsides, compared to seven fouls and two offsides for Toledo.
