Georgia Southern records season-high shot total; Caitlin Conroy and Kaitlin Cook score first collegiate goals in convincing win

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer opened up Sun Belt Conference play with a convincing 3-0 win over Arkansas State on Sunday afternoon at Bo Pitts Field.

The Eagles improved to 6-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league with the victory, the first win for Georgia Southern in a Sun Belt opener since 2021. Arkansas State sees its four-match unbeaten streak come to a close and the Red Wolves are now 2-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern will now be off for ten days, next taking the pitch in a road match at Georgia State on Thursday, September 24.

For a second straight match, Georgia Southern got on the board early - this time scoring just 75 seconds into the contest. Fourth-year midfielder Caitlin Conroy's ball to the top of the box found the feet of fellow fourth-year Meredith Pugh, who fired a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

The match would go into halftime with that 1-0 lead for the Eagles, despite Georgia Southern holding a 12-2 edge in shots in the first half.

The Eagles would get their second goal in the 58th minute. Conroy worked a nice give-and-go with fourth-year forward Addison Comer. Conroy took the ball into the box and fired a shot that beat Arkansas State goalkeeper Taylor Sweat left for her first collegiate goal and the 2-0 advantage.

The final insurance goal would also be a first collegiate goal for the Eagles - this time third-year forward Katilin Cook finished a point blank chance made by a tremendous run from Olivia Golden from the back line. The goal game in the 86th minute and put the match away for the Eagles.

"The first half was a repeat of our non-conference game last Sunday at Toledo," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach said. "You get an early goal, then we didn't really like our response at Toledo. We went down 2 to 1 when we kind of took our foot off the gas. Today was not to the same extent, but I thought we did that again today. We just didn't choose the right options in the first half.

"To their credit, I challenged the team at halftime," Coach Adams said. "I challenged them to just make better choices, find easy passes and they did that in the second half. We found some matchups that we liked and were in our favor, so we're able to get the 2nd and then the 3rd goal to put them away. It was a nice way to start Sun Belt Conference play."

Georgia Southern recorded a season-high 25 shots in holding a 25-7 edge in shots in the contest. Quinn Wilson made a pair of saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season, while Sweat made six saves in net for the Red Wolves. The Eagles held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks and Arkansas State was whistled for eight fouls, compared to six for Georgia Southern.
