Georgia Southern halts a two-match slide with the win over the Trojans; six seniors honored in a pre-match ceremony
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer celebrated Senior Night by picking up a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over visiting Troy on Thursday evening at Bo Pitts Field.
The Eagles improved to 8-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the league, leapfrogging over Troy (3-9-4, 2-4-2 SBC) into one of the eight SBC Tournament postseason spots with three matches remaining to play for Georgia Southern. Next up for the Eagles is a Sunday match at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Georgia Southern opened the scoring in the 12th minute as fourth-year forward Addison Comer was dragged down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Kendall Wilson stepped to the spot and converted for her fourth goal of the season and the 1-0 advantage.
Wilson would get another shot from the spot in the 26th minute after a handball in the box by the Trojans, but Taylor Richards would save this attempt to keep it a 1-0 score. It would end up that way at half as the Eagles enjoyed a 17-5 edge in shots.
In the second half, Georgia Southern would get a key insurance goal in the 55th minute. Fourth-year midfielder Emma Chapman found fourth-year forward Meredith Pugh on the left side, and Pugh's cross found third-year forward Kaitlin Cook in the box. Cook's turnaround shot beat Richards to make it a 2-0 lead.
Troy would pull one back in the 86th minute as a longball by Alaina Uncapher into the box was headed by Melanie Oldner backwards into the net. Georgia Southern was able to see out the final four minutes to collect the win, halting a two-game slide for the Eagles.
"It's a good sign after the adversity we had at Marshall at the adversity we had at Old Dominion," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said about two road matches where the Eagles surrendered late goals to have results slip away. "That we were able to take away from those matches and fix some things. We kept our composure tonight despite injuries and despite some people having to play out of place. We did just enough to get the result at home."
Georgia Southern finished the match with a 21-12 edge in shots. Richards would make nine saves in net for the Trojans, while fourth-year goalkeeper Quinn Wilson made three saves in net for the Eagles. Georgia Southern enjoyed an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Troy was whistled for 12 fouls and one offsides, compared to 11 fouls and two offsides for the Eagles.
Prior to the match, the Eagles honored six seniors - Chapman, Pugh, Addison Comer, Caitlin Conroy, Quinn Wilson and Lauren Connelly - in a pre-match ceremony.
