Two more Eagles tally their first collegiate goals in dominating win over Coastal Carolina

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win over visiting Coastal Carolina in Sun Belt Conference action from Bo Pitts Field.

The Eagles moved to 7-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt with the win, while Coastal Carolina falls to 6-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the league. Georgia Southern will be next in action on Sunday, October 4, traveling to Marshall for a 1 p.m. Sun Belt contest against the Thundering Herd.

Georgia Southern opened the scoring in the 21st minute as fourth-year Caitlin Conroy sent a ball into the box from the left side. Fourth-year Addison Comer got a touch on the ball just in front of the keeper, playing it left to third-year Kaitlin Cook, who finished the point blank chance for her second goal of the season.

Coastal Carolina would answer less than five minutes later. Sammy Schulze had the ball on the right side of the box and her cross found an open Olivia Goretski, who headed the ball in for the equalizer.

First-year Anna Braziunas would put the Eagles back in front late in the first half as she headed in a cross from fifth-year Kendall Wilson in the 40th minute to give Georgia Southern a 2-1 lead going into halftime. The home team had an 8-3 edge in shots at the break.

Two Eagles would then score their first collegiate goals in the second half to put the match away for Georgia Southern. Third-year Emma Chapman got onto a ball that was sent into the box by Comer and finished in the 51st minute to make the score 3-1.

In the 80th minute, fourth-year Lauren Connelly was taken down in the box by the Chanticleers' Silje Nilsen. Connelly stepped to the spot and calmly converted her first goal for the final 4-1 margin.

"The early part of the match had an eerie, deja vu feeling where you feel like you're dominating the match," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said, referring to Thursday's match at Georgia State. "You're out in front, you've got a lot more shots and we didn't have a lot to show for it in the early part, but, credit to the group. We composed ourselves, got out in front and even with the unfortunate hiccup there for them to tie it, our response to get back out in front before the half was good.

"So we outshot our opponent at the half and actually had a lead to show for it, which I think was important," Coach Adams said. "We talked about at halftime needing to get that 3rd goal to have a margin of error, and I think once we did that, it took the wind out of their sails a little bit and gave us momentum that we needed to make it to the finish line."

Georgia Southern finished the match with a 15-12 edge in shots. Quinn Wilson made seven saves in net for the Eagles in claiming the victory, while Aris Lamanna made five saves in net for the Chanticleers. Georgia Southern held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks and the Coastal Carolina was whistled for 10 fouls and one offsides, compared to seven fouls for the Eagles.
