Georgia Southern gets a pair of goals in the match's final 10 minutes to earn a point
HUNTINGTON, Va. - Late second half fireworks led to a 2-2 draw between Georgia Southern women's soccer and host Marshall on Sunday afternoon from Hoops Family Field in Huntington, W. Va.
The Eagles move to 7-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the Sun Belt with the win, while Marshall moves to 6-2-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the league. Georgia Southern is next in action on Thursday, October 8, hosting App State in a 5 p.m. Sun Belt Conference contest at Bo Pitts Field.
Marshall would take a 1-0 lead in the contest in the 33rd minute. Luana Gusmao got ahold of a ball in the box to score the go-ahead goal, and the Thundering Herd would keep that edge into the break.Â
In the second half, the Eagles had a golden chance to tie the match in the 70th minute as Kaitlin Cook's shot hit the left post. That would just be a small sign of what was to come in a frenetic final 10 minutes of the match.
In the 82nd minute, the Eagles would have a corner kick - just their second of the match. However, Kendall Wilson's delivery would find the head of Claire Casey, and Casey's header would find the back of the net to make the score 1-1. It was Casey's first goal of the year and Georgia Southern's first goal on a corner kick this season.
Less than five minutes later, Georgia Southern would take the lead thanks to a fantastic individual effort by Addison Comer. Comer would run onto a ball down the right side, then beat two defenders in the box with a nifty move along the endline. Her cross would then find Cook all alone in front of the box and Cook's shot inside the right post put the Eagles up, 2-1.
Marshall would then get the equalizer with just a minute and 23 seconds left in regulation, using a score by Larissa Ozorio for the final 2-2 tally in the match.
Each team finished the day with 14 shots. Quinn Wilson notched three saves in the match for the Eagles, while Emma Durand also finished with three saves. Marshall held a 6-2 edge in corner kick and the Herd were offsides eight times, compared to the Eagles' three offsides. Georgia Southern was whistled for nine fouls and Marshall was whistled for seven.
