Down by two goals, Eagles score in the 86th minute and hit woodwork in the 90th

ATLANTA - Georgia Southern women's soccer saw its late rally fall short on Thursday evening as Georgia State took a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over the Eagles at the Georgia State Soccer Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league with the win, while Georgia Southern fell to 6-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt. The Eagles return to action on Sunday, hosting Coastal Carolina in a 1 p.m. Sun Belt contest at Bo Pitts Field.

The Eagles had plenty of opportunities to score the first goal of the match, but dangerous shots by Addison Comer and Anna Braziunas were saved by Georgia State goalkeeper Alondra Iriarte.

Georgia State would take the lead on its only shot on goal in the first half - a shot from the top of the box by Himari Sato in the 31st minute. The Panthers would take that 1-0 lead into the break despite Georgia Southern holding a 16-5 edge in shots.

The Panthers doubled their lead in the 51st minute as Aaliyah Faddoul converted a penalty kick to make the score 2-0.

Georgia Southern nearly pulled off the improbable comeback in the match's final five minutes. Fourth-year midfielder Caitlin Conroy pounced on a turnover and scored her second goal of the season in the 86th minute.

The Eagles then had a corner kick with 30 seconds remaining, and Braziunas' header hit the top right corner of the goal frame. A follow-up corner by the Eagles was cleared away and the match ended in favor of the Panthers.

Georgia Southern finished the match with a 22-15 edge in shots. Quinn Wilson made four saves in net for the Eagles, while Iriarte finished with six saves for the Panthers. The Eagles had a 12-4 edge in corner kicks and Georgia Southern was whistled for eight fouls and one offsides, compared to four fouls and three offsides for the Panthers.
