Georgia Southern begins the 2026 season 2-0; first 2-0 start since 2014

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer knocked off preseason ASUN favorite FGCU by a 2-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Bo Pitts Field for its second straight win to open up the 2026 season.

The host Eagles (2-0) are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2014 campaign, while the FGCU Eagles fell to 0-1-1 on the young season. Georgia Southern will conclude its three-match season-opening stretch against ASUN opponents on Thursday, traveling to Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. contest against the Dolphins.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 2018, it was Georgia Southern who struck first in the contest. First-year forward Anna Braziunas had a shot attempt from outside the box blocked, then fourth-year forward Addison Comer ran onto it and touched it into the box to Braziunas, continuing the play. Braziunas then finished deftly for her first collegiate goal in the 10th minute and the early 1-0 lead.

Despite FGCU outshooting Georgia Southern in the first half, the host Eagles would carry that 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Georgia Southern would double its lead in the 63rd minute. A throw-in from the left side by third-year defender Maya Zmistowski was settled by third-year forward Kaitlin Cook. Cook played the ball back to Zmistowski, who then crossed it into the box. Fourth-year forward Meredith Pugh got a head onto the ball and struck it inside the left post for her first goal of the season and the two-goal advantage.

The defense then held firm to help Georgia Southern earn the clean sheet. Fourth-year goalkeeper Quinn Wilson made five saves in net for the win and her first shutout of the season.

"In our first game [against North Florida] I thought we just played extremely hard," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "But what we combined today was just a lot of smarter tactics, a lot better choices and a lot more keeping the ball. We picked and chose our moments when we pressed. And getting a two goal lead was really nice, but I thought we did a good job of putting just enough pressure to not just weather a storm and of counterattacking. I'm just pleased all the way through the lines. Anytime you get a shutout and a clean sheet, that's a team effort."

FGCU ended up with a 17-15 edge in shots on the day, while both goalkeepers - Wilson for Georgia Southern and Madara Bome for FGCU - made five saves. Georgia Southern enjoyed a 7-4 edge in corner kicks and the home team was whistled for eight fouls and two offsides, compared to seven fouls and four offsides for FGCU.
