Georgia Southern remains unbeaten on the young 2026 season; hosts UNCW on Sunday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern women's soccer remained unbeaten to start the 2026 season, earning an 0-0 draw at Jacksonville on Thursday evening at Southern Oak Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Eagles moved to 2-0-1 on the season with the draw, while Jacksonville moves to 1-0-1. Georgia Southern returns to action on Sunday, hosting UNCW in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest at Bo Pitts Field.
In the first half, each team had seven shots. The Eagles' best chance came in the 43rd minute as Scarlett Hirschy's shot from just outside the box was pushed aside by Jacksonville goalkeeper Taylor Gardner, who had come off her line.
Jacksonville started the second half with momentum, recording the first six shots of the period, but the Eagles outshot the Dolphins by a 9-4 margin after the 67th minute. Still, neither team could find a go-ahead goal thanks to the stellar play of both goalkeepers.
Gardner had four saves in net for the host Dolphins, while reigning Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week Quinn Wilson made eight saves for her second straight shutout. It's the first time the Eagles have recorded back-to-back clean sheets since beating North Florida, 3-0, and Jacksonville State, 2-0, on September 5 and 8 of 2024.
Jacksonville finished the match with a slim 17-16 edge in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. The Eagles were whistled for eight fouls and six offsides, compared to five fouls and three offsides for the Dolphins.
"Defensively, we were organized," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "We allowed 17 shots, but I didn't feel like the majority of them were dangerous; they were from outside or from distance so we got a good look at them. Obviously, to concede four goals to them last year, and go from four to zero, you have to be pleased with that and for getting back to back clean sheets. Offensively, we were able to create enough chances but we just weren't able to tuck them."
