HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the opening frame, Bennett Edwards once again did his job of getting a leadoff hit before, two batters later, Brady Christman slung the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard to quickly make it 2-0.
- In the bottom of the same frame, two walks and a single for the Bears loaded the bags with two away before Thomas Burke walked in a Bear before striking out Kersey to strand the bags full and strike out the side.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears put runners on the corner after a walk and single. The dangerous Katz for Mercer doubled down the left-field line to clear the bases, making it 3-2 for the home squad.
- Southern responded themselves in the third, as back-to-back leadoff doubles from James McCoy and Christman scored the senior to tie the contest. Later in the frame with runners on the corners, Jonathan Jaime singled back up the middle to bring Christman home and take the lead, 4-3.
- After six straight retired off the arm of Jayden White, the Eagles put two on the board once again in their fifth. A triple to start the frame put Christman just a single away from the cycle, before Trammell's groundout scored him. Sean White later doubled and stood abroad third before Jack Myers joined the hit party with an RBI-single up the middle, making it 6-3.
- Fast forwarding to the bottom of the sixth, a one-out double from the Bears and two walks loaded the bags. Graziano singled to the outfield to score two, making it just 6-5. However, a needed strikeout from the new arm of Ethan Garrett got the Eagles out the frame.
- Another Christman triple and a walk in the seventh put runners on the corners with none away. However, a strikeout, flyout and a runner caught trying to steal could not get any insurance across.
- After another quiet frame for Mercer, Myers started the eighth with a double to the gap. However, three consecutive strikeouts gave the momentum to the Bears and gave the Eagles no runs.
- After Mercer's third scoreless frame, the Eagles entered the ninth needing insurance. Two one-out walks put two on before Sean White brought one in from his single through the infield. Two batters later with now two in scoring position, Myers doubled to the right-center gap to bring both home, increasing the Southern lead to 9-5.
- In the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff single and two walks loaded the bags with none away to bring up Katz. On a 1-0 pitch, he drilled a ball off the scoreboard to tie the game in one swing, 9-9. The very next pitch, Stephens sent one deep the opposite way out the park to get themselves a walk-off win.
NOTES:
- The eight extra-base hits were the most all season by the Eagles, including starting four of the nine frames with a leadoff XBH.
- Brady Christman's two triples were the first by an Eagle since Daniel Haab's outing in March of 2025 against App State.
- Out of the pen, Jayden White had a career night. The freshman went a career-long 3.2 innings, only allowing two hits (both in the sixth), and matching his career best of four Ks.
- Jack Myers had his first three-hit outing in over a month since March 25th over Charleston. It also was his first three-RBI night since two weeks ago against South Alabama.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles start an eight-game stretch at home with #9 Coastal Carolina being the first series of the stand. First pitch against the Chanticleers is set for 6:30 PM on Friday (May 1st) for Parker's Kitchen Day at J.I.
