Eagles Fall Late to Chanticleers, 7-8

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first inning saw Coastal get two in scoring position via a leadoff single and walk, but two consecutive Ks from Carter DeGondea cut down the frame with none across.
- In the top of the second, Pado's one-out double for Coastal, followed by a walk and double steal, put another two on in scoring position. Barrango drove in an RBI on his groundout to give the Chanticleers the early 1-0 lead.
- Southern collected their first hit of the afternoon with Jonathan Jaime's two-out single, but could not capitalize.
- In the Coastal third, another one-out double eventually set up Estep's single through the infield to score him, making it 2-0.
- The Chanticleers scored a singular run in their third straight inning after a hit batter and single in consecutive batters put another two on before Mitchell's second double of the day drove in one to make it 3-0.
- A one-out single from Brady Christman, followed by a Bryson Trammell double down the line to beat the shift, put Coastal in a dangerous spot. After a walk loaded the bags, Jonathan Jaime drove in Southern's first run off of his fielder's choice.
- In the Eagles' fifth, Nico Senese started the frame with a leadoff homer, his fourth of the year, to make it a one-run game. After a walk and Edwards and McCoy singles to load the bags, Trammell brought everyone in with one swing. His grand slam to right-center was the second by an Eagles this year, and also his fourth long ball of 2026 to make it 6-3.
- In the Chanticleers' sixth, an eagle error off a fielder's choice put runners on the corner with none retired. After Edwards threw out a runner on the bases, Brady Pendley escaped the inning and fired up the home crowd with consecutive Ks to retire the side.
- The Eagles got an insurance run in their seventh after McCoy stood aboard second after getting plunked and advancing on a wild pitch. Sean White drove him in with a ball through the infield to make it 7-3.
- The Coastal eighth saw them storm back, as Thorndyke's leadoff homer sparked their offense. A walk and single put two back on before Mitchell drove them both in with his third double of the afternoon, making it 7-6. After a drop third strike wild pitch saw Watson reach, a sac-fly tied the game with two outs before Coastal took the lead with Estep's single through the infield to cap off their five-run inning.
- In Southern's ninth, two walks (one of them intentional) put two Eagles on before both advanced into scoring position after Horn's second and third wild pitches all season. However, a strikeout with two outs got Coastal to escape with a victory.
NOTES:
- Trammell's grand slam was just the second by an Eagles all season, as Sean White did so against Clemson on March 10th. His four RBIs on the day was now his third of as many RBIs and has collected ten in his past three contests.
- Christman and McCoy each extended their hit streaks to 16 and 17, respectively on the afternoon. They now have the second and third longest hit steaks in nine years, as Sean Smith had a 19-game streak just last season.
- Carter DeGondea punched out six Chanticleers en route to tossing five full innings on the day. It was just his third outing this season of tossing six or more strikeouts, and his first since March 28th against Troy.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Chanticleers continue their series tomorrow (May 2nd) at a new first pitch time of 6 PM for Rode Night at J.I.
