ATHENS, GA. – The Georgia Southern Eagles (19-27, 6-13 SBC) showed flashes despite a tough 8-0 loss in five innings to the No. 15 Georgia Bulldogs (34-13, 11-8 SEC) on Wednesday night.
Facing one of the top teams in the country, the Eagles battled throughout and held their own defensively at times against a high-powered Bulldogs lineup.
Georgia struck early with four runs in the first inning, but Georgia Southern continued to compete and looked to settle in as the game progressed.
The Eagles' pitching staff worked through a deep Georgia lineup, with starter Kaylee Croft handling the bulk of the early innings before Hannah Worthington came on in relief.
Despite the final score, Georgia Southern continued to attack the strike zone and limit free passes against a potent offense.
Offensively, Georgia Southern recorded three hits, including a double from Jaycee Bilbrey. Kayla Christensen and Braelyn Queen also added hits, helping the Eagles put runners on base against a Georgia pitching staff that has been among the best in the SEC.
Defensively, the Eagles played a clean game with no errors and showed discipline in the field, a positive sign against a team that consistently puts pressure on opponents.
Georgia added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the run-rule win, but Georgia Southern continued to compete through the final out, gaining valuable experience against a ranked opponent.
