Eagles Unable to Convert, Fall to Monarchs 8-3

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite a leadoff single on the first pitch of the game from Bennett Edwards, he would be stranded at third after moving on both a stolen base and wild pitch.
- The Monarchs responded with a leadoff single of their own from Morales and advanced into scoring position after a sac-bunt. However, Will Holder picked up a punch out to close the inning and come away clean.
- After Sean White was hit by a pitch, Jonathan Jaime stepped up big with an RBI-double in the right gap for his seventh hit and sixth RBI of the season.
- Holder struck out the first two batters he saw in the ODU second, but the Eagles themselves went down 1-2-3 in their third following afterwards.
- After two hit batters and a walk with just one away, Craig Kalkbrenner entered from the bullpen and immediately forced a popout and strikeout for the Monarchs to strand seven through three played.
- After a Bryson Trammell leadoff single, he was advanced to third following an errant throw on a stolen base. Two batters later, he was thrown out in a pickle following White's fielder's choice to erase a run off the board.
- In the Monarch fourth, they threatened with the bases loaded with just one away after an error, single and walk that forced the Eagles to go back to the pen. With the bags full, a two-RBI single from Leite and a sac-fly plated three for ODU to take their first lead of the series.
- After the Eagles stranded two in their fifth, the Monarchs started their half with a leadoff double from Dye, who later scored off another ODU double, making it 4-1. However, Alex Mason would strike out a batter with two on to limit the damage.
- The Eagles stranded their sixth and seventh on in their sixth frame after Trammell was hit by a pitch and White picked up a single.
- The Monarchs extended their lead to seven the following half-inning as two free bases and a single made way for a grand slam for Johnson, ODU's third of the season.
- After a 12-pitch groundout to start the Monarch seventh, Jax Lewis retired the next two via the K for their first 1-2-3 inning of the night.
- In the Eagle eighth, Brady Christman led off the frame with a solo homer to left field for his eighth of the season to make it 8-2. However, Southern eventually stranded the bases loaded after two strikeouts squandered the inning quickly.
- The Eagles last chance saw them not go down quietly, as White drove in one to close out the night off a sac-fly, but the Monarchs took the season opener.
NOTES:
- With his solo homer, Christman became the first Eagle since Mason McWhorter to do so in four straight games in 2021 when the former standout did so in late April five years ago.
- Both Trammell and McCoy extended their hit streaks on the night to eleven and eight, respectively.
- Trammell's single in the ninth now makes it four of his last five games with multi-hit nights.
- The starter on the night, Will Holder, had his first scoreless appearance of his career, tossing 2.1 innings with, despite five free bases, struck out three.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Monarchs move to the middle contest of the weekend series, with first pitch set for 3 PM at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
