HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Georgia Southern Eagles (18-21) lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (28-16) on Friday night in a tightly contested pitcher's duel.
Both teams traded scoreless frames throughout much of the contest, as veteran Alana Barnard delivered a strong outing in the circle.
The right-hander tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while striking out four and keeping the Golden Eagles off balance all night.
Southern Miss ultimately broke through in the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles used a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt to set up the winning run, with a two-out RBI single plating the game's only score.
Offensively, Georgia Southern was limited to five hits and was unable to capitalize on early opportunities. The Eagles threatened in the first and third innings, including back-to-back singles from Kayla Christensen and Emma Davis to open the game but could not push a run across.
Freshman Jaycee Bilbrey led the Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance, while Christensen, Davis and Brooke Kell each added a hit.
Despite the loss, the Eagles' defense and pitching kept the game within reach throughout, setting up a competitive start to the series.
