HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Georgia Southern Eagles (19-21, 6-8 SBC) bounced back in a tight contest on Saturday afternoon, edging the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (28-17, 9-5) 2-1 to even the series.
The Eagles struck early, capitalizing on opportunities in the first two innings to build a lead they would not relinquish.
In the opening frame, Jaycee Bilbrey reached and came around to score on a Delanie Thames RBI double to center, giving Georgia Southern a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles added what proved to be the decisive run in the second inning.
Demere Gray singled to spark the offense before advancing into scoring position. Following Carley Ramsden's single and a Southern Miss error, Gray crossed the plate on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 2-0.
Southern Miss answered in the third with an unearned run, but that would be all the scoring as the Eagles' defense and pitching held firm down the stretch.
The right-hander Bailey Holland delivered a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on six hits while working around four walks to secure the win.
At the plate, the Eagles totaled five hits, with Valerie Combs, Bilbrey, Thames, Gray and Ramsden each recording one. Thames led the way with the lone RBI of the game.
Southern Miss threatened late, putting runners on in multiple innings, but Georgia Southern's defense came up with timely outs to preserve the one-run victory and knot the series.
