Marshall Gets Best of Eagles, 13-5, on Saturday

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a calm opening frame, the Herd started their scoring in a powerful way as Oliver Service launched a solo homer to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.
- Southern came right back swinging in their second inning after three singles and a fielder's choice ended up plating both Brady Christman and Bennett Edwards.
- Marshall would end up taking the lead for good in their third after three singles, walk, hit batter and a costly catcher's balk with the bases loaded to make the score 5-2, a lead that Marshall would not look back on.
- In the fourth, a triple from Halter set up another run for Marshall to increase their lead to four.
- In the fifth, two more runs were added on by the Marshall bats before their defense would hold strong and leave Southern to strand the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame with only a Bryson Trammell sac-fly to show for it.
- The next two chances at the plate for Marshall saw them up their lead to 13-3, their largest of the day, and threaten to end the game early.
- However, Christman would put a hold on that as he belted his first career home run to right-center to make it a 13-4 contest.
- In the ninth, the Eagles still fought valiantly as Edwards himself homer over the Blue Monster in right, but would ultimately not be enough as the Eagles fell via two strikeouts to close the game.
NOTES:
- Alex Mason made his first collegiate start on the day. He would start the game strong, striking out two of the first five batters he faced.
- Two freshmen led the team in hits as both Christman and Edwards each collected a trio of them on the day.
- For Christman, it would also be his first multi-hit game of his career.
- Frank Wells had his first career extra base hit with a double down the left field line.
- Of the 11 hits on the afternoon for the Eagles, eight of them came from freshmen.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Thundering Herd close out their series tomorrow afternoon (March 22nd), with first pitch set for 1 PM at J.I. Clements Stadium for a day of Good 'Ol Fashioned Baseball.
