GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Mountaineers went for seven runs in the opening frame, including four two-out hits.
- Alex Mason would come in to close out the first inning while sending the Mountaineers down in order.
- Two leadoff hits in the Eagles' second frame by Sean White and Bryson Trammell followed by a hit batter would load the bases for Nico Senese. His dribbler would cause a throwing error on the Mountaineers pitcher, scoring three.
- Jack Myers would pick up his first RBI of the season just a few batters later on his single that scored Senese to make it 8-4.
- The Mountaineers would have another strong inning in their fourth, when Sean Smith's first hit of the series would nab another run before a two-run shot from Matthew Graveline would increase their lead to six.
- Southern would get two back in the bottom of the same inning after four hits from John Davis, Grant Jordan, Myers and McCoy.
- Davis would hit his first homer of his career to make it 10-7 in the sixth.
- A bases-clearing double from Senese would tie up the game at 10, giving him four RBIs on the day.
- West Virginia took the lead back in the top of the eighth after Gavin Kelly scored from an Eagles error on a throwdown to third.
- The Eagles got the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with two away, but the throw to first by the Mountaineer shortstop was just in time to get McCoy.
- Despite his four runs, Alex Mason would have two clean innings, sitting down seven straight.
- In his 1.1 innings on the mound, Will Robbins started his senior campaign off right as he did not allow a run while allowing just two hits and two Ks.
- In his first collegiate outing, Ethan Garrett would toss 2.1 scoreless frames, only allowing just one hit in his nine batters faced.
- Brady Pendley would close the game out for the Eagles, keeping the Mountaineers scoreless and just allowing one hit in his 1.2 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Mountaineers picked up runs in the opening two frames from both an RBI-single from Matt Ineich in the first and a leadoff homer in the second from Matthew Graveline, his second of the series.
- The Eagles would get both runs back off three hits in the second inning, started off by a triple from Davis and RBI knocks from Prozny and Sammy Leis.
- Three walks issued by the Eagles in the 5th inning prompted Will Holder to enter the game with the bases loaded. On an 0-2 count, he would force a pop up to strand three Mountaineers.
- After Holder started the following inning walking the first two batters, he forced a fly out followed by two strikeouts to keep the game level at two.
- In the Eagles' sixth, Davis reached on an error before advancing to second. The next batter saw Prozny lace a single, but the inning ended off a play at the plate when Davis was thrown out trying to take the lead.
- In the seventh, four walks issued to the Mountaineers coupled with a hit would lead to West Virginia taking a 4-2 lead before stretch time.
- West Virginia would smack a double with a runner on first in their eighth, but would be gunned down by Grant Jordan at the plate trying to increase the lead.
- The Eagles would load the bases in the eighth, but a runner's interference on a play at first would prevent the tie late.
- The 8,533 at J.I. over the weekend was the 5th largest attended three-game series and the 4th highest attended series in program history.
- Jansen Kenty and Connor Fugate combined for four innings of scoreless ball, facing 17 batters and only allowing three Mountaineers hits.
- Despite getting the loss, Will Holder made some noise in his first career appearance. He got the out in a bases-loaded situation before retiring two straight via the K in the sixth.
