The 3,023 in attendance marked the third-highest Opening Day attendance at J.I. Clements Stadium in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A first-batter K from Carter DeGondea followed by a double play two batters later got the Eagles' defense off on the right foot in the opening frame.
- The first run of the season for the Eagles came on a two-out RBI single from Bryson Trammel, who scored James McCoy after drawing a full count walk two batters prior.
- The Eagles doubled their lead in the second after Jack Myers grounded out with the bases loaded, but picked up his first RBI of the season.
- The Mountaineers responded back in the next half inning from an RBI-double by Armani Guzman.
- McCoy would pick up his first RBI as an Eagle with a sac-fly to right field after a sac-bunt from Jack Myers put two in scoring position to increase the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
- The Mountaineers cut it to a 3-2 game in their fifth after Tyrus Hall came around to score after his leadoff single by taking home after a Matt Ineich stolen base attempt.
- The Mountaineers poured on 13 runs on seven hits in the final three frames to take the opening game of the season.
- Carter DeGondea picked up his 100th career strikeout after striking out former Eagle Sean Smith in the second inning.
- The 3,023 in attendance at J.I. Clements Stadium accounted for the third-highest attended home opener in program history, trailing 2024's game against Maryland and the 2014 opening game against Georgia Tech.
- Three Eagles picked up their collegiate firsts on the night: Both Max Prozny and John Davis got their first collegiate hits while Dayson Griffis made his first career appearance and strikeout.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles and Mountaineers finish the series with a doubleheader starting tomorrow (Feb. 14th) at 2 PM. The series finale is set to start 45 minutes after the conclusion of Saturday's first game.
