Statesboro, Ga. --- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team defeated Jacksonville 2-1 on Monday night (September 15th) to increase their win streak to now four matches.
The Eagles were the ones to control possession early on in the match, as the Dolphins would only put up ine shot in the opening 15 minutes. Just after the 16 minute mark, the Eagles would set up for one of their eight corner kicks on the night. A lovely ball sent in by
Pablo Portero allowed for
Toby Nevile to rise up and flick in a shot off his head into the net for Southern to take the lead. It would be Portero's first collegiate points, and more importantly, Nevile's first goal of his collegiate career after waiting 40 matches for his moment.
Both sides' offenses were prevalent in the match, as 22 combined shots were taken between the two squads, with 17 of them on target. As a result, Eagle keeper
Nate Martinez would make a season-high six saves on the night to keep his team in contention. However, the defense would falter slightly. Just three minutes into the second half, a shot from Jacksonville was saved and blocked by Martinez, but was unfortunately followed up by a ball that rolled to Kailas Cooper who struck in in for the Dolphins off the rebound.
After the match drew even, the Dolphins would hold the aggression and momentum for most of the second half. The chances did come for Southern, however. Shots for three Eagles in a five-minute span were saved midway through the half, but nothing was broken through.Â
It was up to the Eagles' captain, however, to make his move.
With just seven minutes to go in the contest, chaos in the box allowed for a dribbling ball to find the foot of
Kevin Pierre awaiting outside the D. With a plant and a strike, he found the right side of the net past a diving keeper to give the Eagles the victory and break a four-match losing streak to the Dolphins. For Pierre, it's the second goal of his Georgia Southern career with the first coming on the road at Marshall last season.
The eagles held the Dolphins to just one corner kick all match and were also not given a card for the full ninety minutes. The Eagles ten shots on target were the most since their 5-0 win at Coastal Carolina last season where they racked up an even dozen. The now four game win streak is the longest in twenty seasons, where the 2005 squad would also achieve it in non-conference play.
The result marks the now start of a two-match road stretch for the Eagles. First, Southern opens up Sun Belt play at Old Dominion this upcoming Friday night (September 19th). Kickoff in Norfolk is set for 7 PM ET.
