STATESBORO - No. 21-ranked Florida women's tennis collected a 6-1 win over host Georgia Southern on Sunday morning at the Wallis Tennis Center in Statesboro.
Despite being short-handed, the Gators were able to improve to 3-2 on the season. Georgia Southern (5-2) saw its four-match win streak come to a close. It was the highest-ranked women's tennis opponent that the Eagles have hosted at Wallis, and it was the first ranked team hosted since #70 Furman back on April 9, 2005.
Florida claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Gators then swept all five competed singles matches. Franzi Heinemann won her first set against Nikola Daubnerova, but fell in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker after the team match had been decided.
"Being able to host nationally-ranked Florida was great for the program," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "I definitely feel that we were able to take a ton away from the match. We need to find a way of being more comfortable in the challenging and pivotal moments of a match. I think if we are able to do that, along with reducing too many 'free points', we will be in a really good place."
