Softball Run Rules Lipscomb, Falls to Harvard in Extras

Eagles move to 4-5 on the season

STATESBORO – Georgia Southern softball opened day two of the Bash in the Boro tournament with a run-rule victory over Lipscomb, 13-0, in five innings before falling to Harvard in eight innings, 5-4 at Beautiful Eagle Field on Saturday. 

The Eagle offense exploded in game one with a season-high 13 runs and 14 hits in the contest. The 14 hits is the most since the 2023 season when the Eagles tallied 15 hits at Georgia State on April 15. 

Game One (Georgia Southern 13, Lipscomb 0) 
Georgia Southern's offense exploded in the opening frame scoring seven runs on six hits. Emma Davis led off the inning with a bunt single and Payton Cushman drew a hit by pitch before Madi Gillespie put the Eagles on the board on an RBI single to left field. The Eagle offense continued with five consecutive hits to plate six more runs, making it 7-0 after the first. 

Faith Barth recorded her first hit of the season, an RBI double to left field before Delanie Thames and Kayla Christensen singled to plate two more runs. Makayla Brantley rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to right field. 

The offensive explosion continued in the second with the bases loaded Christensen tallied her second hit of the game, an RBI single up the middle to add another run.Braelyn Queen drew a five-pitch RBI walk and Valerie Combs singled up the middle to plate two more runs, to make it 10-0. 

Thames recorded the Eagles' first home run, a two-run shot to right field to continue the scoring in the third. Gillespie drove in her second run of the game on an RBI single to center field, making it 13-0. 

Maddie Johnson secured her second shutout victory of the season tossing 5.0 innings allowing just two hits in the contest. 

Five Eagles tabbed career highs in the contest as Thames tied a career high in hits (3) and set a new career high in runs scored (3) while Barth tied her career high in hits (3). Christensen drew a career high runs batted in (2) and Madi tied her Georgia Southern career high in runs batted (2). Brantley tallied two RBI for a new career high. 

Game Two (Georgia Southern 4, Harvard 5)
Georgia Southern struck first in the opening frame scoring three runs on three hits. Davis drew a seven-pitch walk before Valerie Combs doubled to right center field to plate the run. Two batters later, Gillespie recorded an RBI single to center field to score Combs. Thames rounded out the scoring, producing a run on an RBI single, making it 3-0 after one complete inning. 

Bailey Holland tossed five hitless innings before surrendering four runs on three hits in the sixth innings. The Crimson recorded three straight singles to load the bases with no outs before back-to-back fielder's choice plated two runs, An Eagle error allowed two more runs to score to even things up in the sixth. 

Things would remain even after the seventh to send the game into extras and the international tie breaker rules. A sac-fly in the eighth plated the Crimson's game winning run as the Eagles couldn't produce runs in the bottom of the frame.
