Eagles Match With Blazers, 2-2

Statesboro, Ga --- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team drew with the UAB 2-2 at Bo Pitts Field on Sunday night (September 15th).

Both team came out aggressive in the first half as both teams each received a yellow card in the opening four minutes. The Eagles were the attackers early on as they had 3 shots in the opening 15 minutes. However, the Blazers were the ones to strike first as UAB's Lucas Rizzo fired off a shot from a cross-in in the 16th minute. The rest of the half saw no other goals as it was the Eagles who led in shots 6-2 at the half break and with the advantage in fouls, 5-2.

At the start of the final 45, the Eagles attacked relentlessly on offense, but to no avail. Just as things were starting to stagnate for Southern, Massimo Caruso found himself with space and a keeper playing too far up and fired a shot from the near left side of the midfield corner. His strike caught the UAB defense off guard as his shot in the top corner of the nylon put the game back at even in the 58th minute for Caruso's first career collegiate goal.

Just 11 minutes later, Georgia Southern set up for one of their five corner kicks on the night. Harry Dale sent a ball in just past the diving keeper's hands where Ricky Louis was there to finish in the box. Louis' second goal of the season in the 67th minute gave Georgia the 2-1 comeback lead. For Dale, he also picks up his second assist of the night.

With the Blazers now the pressured ones on offense, the Eagles started switch their mindset to playing defense, but it unfortunately could not hold out forever. With just 90 seconds remaining in the match, UAB's Gustavo Barbosa played a ball in to Gui Gragnano, who finished the strike to end the match even at two.

For Georgia Southern, it ended their three-match win streak, but the Eagles still have not suffered defeat yet this season. Southern led in shots 12-6 and each team picked up 10 fouls, including seven total yellow cards across the 90 minutes. The draw is the second straight one of the series between the two programs, and the fourth in their nine game history.

The next match for the Eagles (3-0-2) is Friday, September 20th, for the first Sun Belt match of the season against Kentucky. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM in Lexington.
