STATESBORO - Furman's Ashlyn Goila scored the game's only goal in the 27th minute to lead the visiting Paladins to a 1-0 victory over host Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at Bo Pitts Field in Statesboro.
The win halts a four-match losing streak for Furman (2-4), while Georgia Southern falls to 1-3-1 on the season with the loss. The Eagles return to action on Thursday, traveling to Jacksonville to take on North Florida at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles outshot the Paladins, 10-3, in the first half, but none of Georgia Southern's shots were on target. Furman got the breakthrough in the 27th minute as Maddie Massie dribbled down the left side and crossed right in front of goal, where Goila's point-blank finish put the Paladins up, 1-0.
In the second half, the Eagles pushed forward and dominated possession over the final 30 minutes in an attempt to find an equalizer. Kyleigh Drew's shot in the 62nd minute that was saved by Furman goalkeeper Reese DeJong was the only shot on goal tallied by the Eagles in the match.
Georgia Southern finished the match with a 15-3 edge in shots. Each keeper made one save - DeJong for Furman and Katie Oakley for the Eagles. Both teams had four corner kicks on the day and both teams were whistled for 11 fouls. Furman was offsides seven times in the match while Georgia Southern was offsides just once.
"We simply didn't get the job done today," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "Furman kept things tight and converted on one of their five chances on the day. They stuck together to make that goal hold up as the difference in the game. My biggest concern was that we created 13 chances, but only forcing the keeper to make one save all game. We hit the post twice, but unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be."
