Fourth-year forward is enjoying a career season while savoring the memories she is making in Statesboro
STATESBORO - Addison Comer doesn't remember how she got into soccer - only that she never really left it. The Georgia Southern forward grew up with a ball at her feet, and over time, the game became the place she felt most at home.
"I started playing soccer when I was three years old," she said. So it's not hard to imagine that she has blossomed into one of the Eagles' leaders on the field in this, Comer's fourth year at Georgia Southern. Going into Sunday's match against Arkansas State, she is the active career leader in goals and points for the Eagles, a testament to years of steady work and quiet confidence.
Finding Her Place in Statesboro
Comer's path to Georgia Southern was shaped by a need to challenge herself. When she visited campus, something clicked. "On my visit I immediately loved Statesboro," she said. "I wanted to challenge myself to compete at a high level and step out of my comfort zone and Georgia Southern was the best place for me to do that."
One moment in particular made her decision clear. "On my visit, Carley Borgelt showed me that it was like a big family and that's something I really value so it was a no-brainer that this was where I wanted to be," Comer said.
Basketball had been part of her life, too, as she played until her junior year of high school at Jackson Academy in Mississippi - but soccer was the sport she wanted to pursue in college. She scored 39 career goals and added 22 assists for the Raiders, showing the attacking instincts that would define her collegiate career.
Stepping Up Each Season
Comer's growth at Georgia Southern has been steady. She played in only one game as a first year in 2023, but she kept working, and each season since then she has taken a step forward - earning more minutes, more goals and more responsibility. Her steady improvement reflects the same composure she admires in her mother.
"My mom has been the biggest influence on my life," Comer said. "She carries herself in a composed way and I really try to model that."
That composure was forged during her mother's battle with breast cancer. "Her strength is something that really influences me, her battle with breast cancer was something that required a lot of strength and composure and the manner in which she handled all of it was truly admirable. I am so proud of her for that," Comer said. "She has always been my rock and best friend, so when she kicked cancer, I felt like I could do anything I set my mind to - whether that's soccer or anything in life. What she did was the greatest thing I've ever seen."
Moments That Last
For Comer, she has experienced some prized moments of her Eagle career - but realizes that she's not yet done making them. "My best memory, so far, at Georgia Southern was my junior year when we were tied 2-2 with Samford with five minutes left and we came back to win the game 3-2," she said. Comer's goal came at the 85:40 mark of the contest against the defending SoCon champions. "The thrill and feeling of it all was amazing."
Those moments have helped shape her into a leader on the field and a steady presence off it. And as she looks ahead, she already knows the direction she wants to go. "My career plan after Georgia Southern is to work within sports marketing," Comer said.
Grateful for the People
Through all of it - the goals, the wins, the challenges - Comer keeps coming back to the people around her. "The people make the place and I am so grateful I picked Georgia Southern because I got to meet some of my life long friends," she said.
It's a simple sentiment, but one that captures the heart of who she is: a competitor who values connection, a leader who draws strength from those she loves and a student-athlete who found the right place to grow.
