Georgia Southern remains unbeaten on the 2026 season; best start to the year since 2012
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer remained unbeaten on the 2026 season, earning a 1-1 draw with UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Bo Pitts Field.
The Eagles (2-0-2) are unbeaten to start the season after four matches for the first time since 2012, when Georgia Southern started 4-0-2 en route to a SoCon Championship campaign. UNCW moved to 3-0-1 on the season with the draw. Georgia Southern now starts a four-game road swing, starting Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Mercer in Macon, Ga.
A tight defensive first half saw the Eagles have to utilize VAR to get the advantage in the contest. Fourth-year forward Addison Comer was tripped in the box on an attack, but at first no whistle was blown. Head coach Chris Adams challenged the play, and after the VAR review, a penalty kick was awarded in the 31st minute. Fifth-year Kendall Wilson stepped to the spot and converted to put the Eagles up, 1-0.
At the half, the Eagles held the one goal lead and a 4-3 edge in shots.
In the second half, UNCW equalized in the 52nd minute. Allie Planeaux's looping cross from the left side found Caigan Leonard at the right edge of the box. Leonard settled the ball and finished inside the right post for her third goal of the season.
The Eagles' best chance to get the match winner came on a sequence in the 77th minute. Third-year forward Kaitlin Cook had the ball with the keeper out of the box, but a pair of her shots were blocked by UNCW defenders. Paisley Cathey got the ball at the top of the box but her shot was also blocked, and a final follow try from Kendall Wilson missed right.
Georgia Southern finished the match with an 11-9 edge in shots. Quinn Wilson made a pair of saves in net for the Eagles, while UNCW goalkeepers Zoe Anderson and Lili White each had a save in their respective halves of work. UNCW held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks and Georgia Southern was whistled for 15 fouls, compared to the Seahawks' nine fouls and six offsides.
"Just lots of fight from our team today," Coach Adams said. "At times we got stretched. UNCW is a very good team that's able to keep the ball for long spells. Defensively, I thought we did a really good job - obviously we let them get free once on the back post and they made us pay for that, credit to them on that, but for the most part I was really pleased with just our organization.
"Offensively I thought we needed to do a little better job of keeping the ball for longer periods of time," Coach Adams said. "When we tried to do that, when we put it on the ground and knocked it, I thought some good things came of it. The draw is probably a fair result, with two undefeated teams coming into the day and two undefeated teams coming out of the day."
