Senior scores 22 points off the bench, Eagles improve to 2-0 at Hanner Fieldhouse
STATESBORO – Aided by a season-high 48 bench points, Georgia Southern men's basketball (2-1) improved to 2-0 at Hanner Fieldhouse, beating Augusta (0-3) 79-69 on Monday night.
"Credit to [Augusta], they made us uncomfortable a good portion of the night," head coach Charlie Henry said. "There are some things we've got to clean up and get better at. We've just got to get back to work and get ready to play well here this weekend."
Trailing 15-14, the Eagles went on an 11-4 run and never looked back, stretching the lead to seven after Avantae Parker's dunk at 6:49. Nakavieon White's vicious one-handed slam followed to keep it at seven.
The Jaguars fought back to tie it at 30 before another run for the Eagles, a 9-0 advantage after a pair of steals and scores by Bradley Douglas and Adante' Holiman.
The Eagles led by seven heading into the break, shooting 42.4 percent from the field.
A Tyson Brown free throw gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead of the evening, one they kept at eight after Dontae Horne's layup with just under 19 minutes left.
Augusta cut the deficit back to four, which the Eagles responded by stretching back double-digits. Douglas' three made it a 60-48 lead with 11:09 left.
The Jaguars never made it closer than eight points for the rest of the game. A fastbreak dunk by Brown brought it back to 12 with seven minutes left, and the deficit remained at ten as the Eagles won 79-69.
Douglas led all scorers with his first 20-point effort of the season, recording his third straight double-digit scoring effort off the bench with 22.
"It was a good response tonight to get the win," he said. "I just kept my head down and did what the coaching staff asked of me."
White (12), Brown (11) and Holiman (10) all reached double figures, the latter two of which also extended their double-digit scoring streak to three games. Horne had a career-high eight boards to lead the way, also dishing five assists in the win.
The Eagles scored a season-high 48 bench points in the victory, improving to 2-0 at home this season.
GS will get set for the Rock Hill Classic beginning on Friday, playing three games in three days.
