4/20/2023 2:58:00 PM | Baseball
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team is set to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Sun Belt Conference series at the Kennedy Center YMCA in Huntington, W. Va. First pitch on Friday, April 21, is set for 3 p.m.
Georgia Southern and Marshall have met a total of 22 times before the upcoming series, with the Eagles holding a 18-4 record over the Herd. However, Georgia Southern is just 1-3 against Marshall on the road. GS and MU last met in 2011, where the Eagles and Herd split two games in Beckley, W. Va.
For a period of five seasons, Georgia Southern and Marshall were conference foes in the SoCon. The two were both members from 1992-1997, where the majority of the meetings between the two teams came from. Georgia Southern won 12 of the 14 conference match ups the two had, which included two six-game winning streaks.
Georgia Southern comes into the match up with an 18-19 overall record and a 8-7 SBC mark. The Eagles' last time out saw them fall on the road against Kennesaw State, but before that, the Eagles swept a Saturday doubleheader against App State to take the series over the Mountaineers two games to one. Marshall comes into the series with a 15-20 mark, including a 4-11 SBC mark, under first-year head coach Greg Beals. Last time out, the Herd split a two-game midweek series with Eastern Kentucky, and before that, the Herd was swept by Texas State in Huntington.
Georgia Southern will trot out a reconfigured rotation that features all left-handers, with Ty Fisher (2-4, 5.54 ERA) leading off on Friday, Mitchell Gross (1-2, 3.55 ERA) taking the mound on Saturday, and Anthony DiMola (1-1, 5.06 ERA) taking the bump on Sunday. Marshall will respond with a rotation of RHP Patrick Copen (2-4, 4.50 ERA) on Friday, LHP Raymond Pacella (0-4, 6.02 ERA) on Saturday, and RHP Zac Addkison (2-5, 4.46 ERA) on Sunday.
The last time the Eagles had three lefties start on the weekend was during a tournament hosted by South Alabama in 2006, where Everett Teaford started against South Alabama on March 11, Josh Lairsey started against Coastal Carolina on March 12, and Aaron Eubanks ended the weekend with a second match up against USA on March 12.
