Eagles Open Series Against UTA With 5-3 Win

Georgia Southern looks to win the series in Friday’s doubleheader

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team withstood a ninth-inning rally from the UT-Arlington baseball team to open up a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with a 5-3 win Thursday evening at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Georgia Southern (36-17, 21-7 SBC) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning beginning with an RBI-single from Christian Avant, scoring Jason Swan, followed up with an RBI-single by Austin Thompson to bring Avant back to the plate.

Jarrett Brown would be responsible for the Eagles' final three runs, first with an RBI-single in the bottom of the third inning to score Noah Ledford. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brown would send Avant home with a sac fly to center field. To cap off the GS scoring, Brown would knock his fourth home run of the season to right center, bringing the Eagles' lead to 5-0.

UT-Arlington (15-37, 7-21 SBC) would begin to mount a rally in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs, including two runs with two outs, but Jake Martin was able to get the final batter to strike out swinging, saving the 5-3 win for Georgia Southern.
