JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - No. 49 North Florida notched a 6-1 collegiate women's tennis victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Sunday morning at the UNF Tennis Courts in Jacksonville.
North Florida improved to 3-5 on the year with the win, while Georgia Southern fell to 3-4. The Eagles are next in action on Thursday, traveling to Mercer to take on the Bears in Macon, Ga., at 2:30 p.m.
The Ospreys captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. In singles play, the Eagles captured a pair of first sets, then Silvia Martinez Jimenez finished off her match at No. 4 singles, picking up a 6-3, 7-5 win over Isabel Oliveira for Georgia Southern's lone point in the match.
"UNF is such a strong team, and so well coached," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "I feel we played very well at moments throughout the match today, and all weekend. Now we just need to string together more and more of those positive moments. We have put together an ambitious schedule during this early part of the season. We've played four straight matches against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, and five of our seven matches this season have been against NCAA squads. I feel like we are doing what we need to do in order to find out exactly what we need to continue to improve each day. I'm encouraged with what we have learned, and now it's time to get to work on these things as we begin to inch closer to our Sun Belt Conference season."
