STATESBORO – Neftali Alvarez made a layup as time expired to lift Mercer to a 77-75 men's basketball win over Georgia Southern Sunday evening in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Mercer (6-0) got possession under the Georgia Southern basket with 0.6 seconds left after Felipe Haase tied up Elijah McCadden as the two tried to rebound a Jeff Gary 3-point miss. After a stoppage to check the time on the replay monitor, the official tossed the ball to Gary to trigger the inbounds pass, and the redshirt junior flipped the ball to a cutting Alvarez, whose layup off the glass beat the buzzer.
Georgia Southern (3-2) trailed 72-69 following the last media timeout with 2:27 to play, but Eric Boone got a steal and a transition layup and after a couple empty possessions by both teams, Zack Bryant was fouled and hit two free throws for a one-point Eagle lead with 51.9 seconds to play.
Haase nailed a triple from the wing with 42 seconds left to put the Bears back in front, but McCadden hit a step-back jumper from the baseline to tie the score with 14.9 seconds to go, setting up the Bears' final possession.
Eagles of the Game
Zack Bryant scored a game-high 24 points and added five rebounds, an assist and three steals. McCadden finished with 10 points and four rebounds, and Prince Toyambi collected 13 points, nine boards and a steal. Boone finished with six points, six steals, six assists and five rebounds.
Key Moments
The Eagles scored the last four points of the first half on a Mackenzie McFatten putback and a pair of Grant Weatherford free throws and netted the first eight points of the second stanza to open a 16-point lead. Bryant hit a long 3-pointer late in the shot clock, and Toyambi threw one down after a steal and followed it with a conventional three-point play.
With the Eagles leading 54-45, Mercer made four 3-pointers in a 14-6 run, to trim the margin to one-point midway through the period. A 10-2 Mercer run, capped by a Gary layup with 3:16 to go, gave the Bears the 72-69 cushion.
