MONROE, La. - Ashleigh Morton hurled a two-hitter in the nightcap and Georgia Southern smashed four home runs in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader split at UL Monroe on Friday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex. ULM won the first game, 14-13, but the Eagles took the second game, 9-1, in five innings.
The Eagles (17-19, 4-10 SBC) and the Warhawks (7-30, 3-11 SBC) will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game at 3 p.m. ET, moved up one hour from its originally scheduled game time.
"In the first game, I thought our offense did an incredible job fighting back and chipping away at the ULM lead," Georgia Southern Head Coach Kim Dean said. "We executed the game plan that we went in with, and I was happy that we had a couple of people who came off the bench and really contributed. We fell short, but we never gave up. In the second game, we came out with a little fire in our bellies with two early home runs, including Jezz Mazur's first collegiate home run, and putting a big crooked number in the fourth. I'm proud of Shelby Wilson setting a new school record as well for reaching base. It was real important to take the second game, to give us an opportunity to take the series tomorrow."
GAME 1: ULM 14, GS 13
Georgia Southern got off to a hot start in the first game, scoring four runs - three on a three-run blast by Macy Coleman - to take a 4-0 lead.Â
The Warhawks quickly answered with five runs in the bottom of the first, and eventually built a 13-4 lead through the end of the fourth inning.
Georgia Southern came all the way back to tie the game thanks to three runs in the fifth inning, then four in the sixth - three coming on a another three-run blast, this time from Logan Harrell. The home run was the 10th of the season for Harrell, and she becomes just the 11th player in GS softball history to reach double digit home runs in a season.
Hannah Farrell then delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 13-all. But the Warhawks scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an error.
Adrianna Chavarria (5-8) hurled six innings, giving up 13 hits and 10 runs to earn the win, walking three while striking out three. Shelby Barfield (1-2) took the loss, giving up three hits and three unearned runs in 3 2/3 innings of relief, walking five and striking out two.
Faith Shirley went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while Farrell ended her day 3-for-3 with three RBI. Coleman and Harrell each had two hits and four RBI.
GAME 2: GS 9, ULM 1 (5 inn.)
In the nightcap, solo home runs from Faith Shirley and Jess Mazur in the first two innings staked the Eagles to a two-run lead. Mazur's home run was the first of her collegiate career.
The Eagles then sent 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run Ellington Day double.Â
That was more than enough run support for Morton, who limited the Warhawks to two hits and one unearned run, walking two and striking out two to improve to 7-4 on the season. Jessie Watts (0-7) took the loss for the Warhawks, giving up seven hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings of work, walking one and striking out one.
Shirley had a 3-for-3 game in the nightcap, scoring a pair of runs and driving in two. Mazur finished the game 2-for-3 with her home run, while Shelby Wilson went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a pair of walks, extending her streak of consecutively reaching base to 33. That set a new Georgia Southern record, breaking the old record of 32 straight games set by Shanita Black in 2006.
