Georgia Southern Drops Two on the Diamond

Shirley picks up first collegiate home run

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday on the second day of the Bash in the Boro at Eagle Field. In the opener, Saint Francis exacted revenge from Friday night's loss in downing the Eagles 10-1 in six innings, and Southern dropped a 10-7 decision to Winthrop in the second game.

GAME 1: Saint Francis 10, GS 1 (5)
The Red Flash wasted little time in jumping out to a big lead, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The Eagles didn't panic and fought right back in the bottom half of the inning. Mehkia Freeman legged out an infield single, stole second base and score on Shelby Wilson's double down the line.

Saint Francis added a run in the third inning to stretch the lead back to three and moved the lead to four with a triple and a GS error in the fourth inning. The Eagles had a chance to get back into the game in the fifth inning, loading the bases, but a pair of strikeouts ended the rally.

At the plate, Hannah Farrell led the way with a pair of hits while Faith Shirley, Freeman, Wilson, Allyssah Mullis each had one hit.

Freshman Ashleigh Morton (L, 0-1) got the start in the circle. She went four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with a strikeout. Kaylee Ramos went an inning-plus, allowing four runs runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk. Jess Mazur went the final inning, allowing an unearned run on a hit with a walk.

GAME 2: Winthrop 10, GS 7
Winthrop (3-1) got on the board in the first inning, but GS responded in the bottom half of the inning. Wilson drove in Shirley and then Hannah Farrell's double to the gap made it 3-1. Macy Coleman's single through the right side gave the Eagles their fourth run of the inning.

Winthrop exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning to re-take the lead. In the bottom of the stanza, GS loaded the bases up and then Farrell lifted a sac fly to deep center, allowing Shirley to score from third. Freeman was full throttle the whole way and scored from second base for the rare two-RBI sac fly to tie it up.

Trailing 10-6 in the fourth inning, Shirley unloaded her first collegiate home run to center field to cut into the lead but the Eagles ran into a buzz-saw in Winthrop freshman pitcher Bella Roy who came in and struck out 11 in four innings of relief to pick up the win in her collegiate debut.

Shirley led the way with a pair of hits and a walk, scoring three runs from the leadoff spot. Farrell also had two hits and drove in four runs. Also picking up hits were Freeman, Wilson, Mullis, Logan Harrell and Coleman.

Rylee Waldrep (L, 1-1), Mazur and Morton each saw action in the circle.

The Eagles (2-2) will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, playing two more games. They'll open with UT Martin at 11:30 a.m. and then will play Savannah State at 2 p.m.
