STATESBORO, Ga. – After a 45-minute lightning delay, the Georgia Southern women's soccer team began its 2018 campaign in Fort Myers, Florida, Friday night, falling 3-0 to eight-time A-Sun champion Florida Gulf Coast. It was just the second meeting in program history as the Blue and White fell last season 3-0 at home in Statesboro.
The first 15 minutes of the match were filled with a bit of nerves and a lot of anxious play by both sides. FGCU was able to settle down first, collecting the first goal of the evening on a miscommunication in the back line. Marjorie Boilesen chipped Jocelyn Springer to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Blue and White were still in search of their first shot on goal as time ticked away in the half.
In the second half Florida Gulf Coast was able to take control of the game and add to their lead. Hope Van Wagner finished the cross from the right box and headed her goal off the cross bar to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Less than 12 minutes later Evdokia Popadinova scored off a rebound into the bottom left corner to give FGCU a 3-0 lead in the 60th minute.

WHAT HEAD COACH BRIAN DUNLEAVY SAID
"We played a very impressive team, FGCU was outstanding. It was a tough atmosphere to play in as well, their fans were excellent. The first half was a barrage, and although we conceded two 2nd half goals. We were a much better team after halftime, and were able to adjust to the pace of the game and put some pressure on them. Tough result, but we learned a lot about ourselves tonight, and we can move forward to our home opener on Sunday."
NEXT UP
The Eagles will face return home to the friendly confines of Eagle Field, where they will take on Chattanooga at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
