Georgia Southern Baseball has five players selected in 2018 MLB Draft
STATESBORO, Ga. – On Wednesday evening, the Major League Baseball Entry Draft concluded with five Eagles hearing their names called. Chase Cohen and Brian Eichhorn heard their names called in the second day of picks, while the remaining three Eagles were chosen on the final day.
"It is always a special moment for a young man to hear his name called during the draft," Head coach Rodney Hennon said. "Certainly Chase Cohen and Brian Eichhorn have been a big part of the program for the last three years. Both guys improved each year and it is great to see that hard work pay off. We are very excited for each of these young men and they all have bright futures ahead of them."
The two pitchers selected in the ninth round marked the first time since 2012 that two Georgia Southern Baseball players have gone in the top-nine rounds. It also marked the first time since 2003 that two Eagle pitchers have gone inside the top-nine rounds, since Dennis Dove and Kevin Culpepper were selected.
Chase Cohen was selected in the ninth round, pick 263 by the Oakland Athletics. Cohen produced a 13-11 record while at Georgia Southern and appeared in 52 games in his three seasons with the Eagles. Cohen primarily was used as a relief pitcher in 2018, recording 60 strikeouts in just 47 innings pitched.
Brian Eichhorn was selected 20 picks later in the ninth round, pick 283, by the Cleveland Indians. Eichhorn was promoted to the Friday starting gig during the 2018 season and accounted for a 13-10 record in his career at Georgia Southern. Eichhorn tallied 106 strikeouts in his 14 starts this season and only walked 29 of the 369 batters he faced.
Blakely Brown was chosen in the final day, in round 24 by the New York Yankees. Brown, a transfer from the University of Georgia, redshirted the 2018 season and was unable to appear in any games for the Eagles.
On top of the three current Eagles that were drafted in the 2018 MLB Entry Draft, two signees heard their names called out of high school. Jonathan Edwards was selected in the 16th round, pick 479, by the Texas Rangers. The 6 foot 6 inch, right handed pitcher, played for Eagle's Landing High School and the 17u Hardknox Orioles during the summer.
The final Eagle drafted in during the 2018 MLB Entry Draft was David Hollie, who was selected in the 37th round, pick 1112, by the Kansas City Royals. The 6 foot 3 inch, utility player, is from Hephzibah, Georgia and plays for the Baseball Scoutz summer league team and attended Cross Creek High School.
