Golden Eagles Top Eagles To Close Weekend Series

Southern Miss takes the series sweep with the 8-2 win

HATTIESBURG, MISS.
– Georgia Southern Baseball dropped Saturday night's series finale to No. 15 Southern Miss, 8-2 as weekend non-conference play comes to an end. The Eagles will open league play next weekend with a three game set at home against Louisiana. Georgia Southern travels to Mercer on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. tilt in Macon.

SCORING PLAYS
Top 2nd - Mason McWhorter lashed a double to center to open the second frame. The Eagle offense worked him around to score on a Noah Searcy single up the middle to post an early 1-0 lead.
Bottom 3rd - Southern Miss took the lead in the third inning with three runs off two hits with two Eagle error in the mix.
Bottom 4th - A sacrifice fly in the fourth plated one run and pushed the lead out to 4-1.
Bottom 5th - The Golden Eagles added four runs in the fifth with two coming on back-to-back RBI doubles to left, and right, respectively. A two-run home run to left tacked on two more and made it an 8-1 game.
Top 6th - Mitchell Golden opened the sixth frame with a leadoff home run to left. It was Golden's first career home run and the fourth this season for the Eagles.

NOTES
- The series finale was pushed up Saturday due to expected rains in the Pine Belt. The teams played a split doubleheader with games starting at Noon and 6 p.m. local time.
- Mason McWhorter went 2-for-4 with a run scored, lacing a double on the first pitch of the second inning. The sophomore got a first pitch fastball and punished the Golden Eagles, kick-starting the Georgia Southern offense in the frame.
- Starting pitcher David Johnson was hooked for his first loss of the season on the bump to fall to 1-1. The freshman gave up eight runs, seven earned off 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in four and two-thirds innings of work.
- Georgia Southern's bullpen hurlers, Zach Cowart and Hayden Harris combined to hold Southern Miss to no runs and one hit over the final three and a third innings of work. Harris fanned two in the longest career outing for the freshman.

UP NEXT
Georgia Southern will return to Statesboro on Sunday to prepare for their trip to Mercer on Wednesday night. The Eagles face the Bears at 6 p.m.
