Eagles draw a rematch with No. 10 seed Appalachian State in first round
STATESBORO, Ga. – On Tuesday morning the Sun Belt Conference announced the 2017 Sun Belt Tennis Championship bracket. All tournament matches will be hosted by the City Park and the Pepsi Tennis Center, located in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Eagles drew the seventh seed and will face off against the 10th seed Appalachian State. The Blue and White are looking for revenge, after falling to the Mountaineers 4-3 just two weeks ago. Thursday's match will begin at 12:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcasted on the radio and through live stats.
"This is the week we have been looking forward to all season," said head coach Michele Stanford. "Overall, I would say that we are pleased with our draw. We played a touch match against App State a couple of weeks ago, and I know that our team is ready to face them again in the tournament. We have had a lot to learn over the past few matches, and it will be very important that we use these lessons learned to push us through each match this week."
The Blue and White are coming off of a tough loss against College of Charleston last Wednesday. The Eagles fell to the Cougars 6-1, on senior day. Senior Mariana Ranzahuer collected the Eagles lone point in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. The Eagles will now look to snap the four match losing streak that they are on against Appalachian State, after finishing the year 10-11.
The Mountaineers enter play with a 5-18 record overall, falling to Elon 7-0, in their final match of the season. The Mountaineers have faced three ranked opponents as listed by ITA, NC State (28th), Wake Forest (30th), and UNC (3rd). Las time the Eagles faced the Mountaineers the Blue and White put a lot pressure on them from the start. The Eagles would drop the doubles point, but rally to even the score at 3-3, behind victories from Emilia Bujan, Ella Monsey, and Mariana Ranzahuer. The Mountaineers would go on to clinch the victory defeating the Eagles 4-3, just 10 days ago.
