NEW ORLEANS – Members of the Georgia Southern men's basketball team made their third annual trip to Samuel J. Green Charter School Thursday in New Orleans.
The Eagles visited a kindergarten class for about an hour. After
Dominique Bullock,
David Georgiev,
James Holder, Deshaven Reynolds and
Brandon Wimberly introduced themselves, Director of Operations
Rob Burke and the Eagles spoke to the children and a handful of seventh and eighth graders about the importance of working hard on the court and in the classroom.
"There are two classrooms at school," said Burke. "There's the classroom where you get your school work done and the classroom on the court where you learn how to play the game and understand the philosophies of your coach. You need to excel in both to be able to play sports in college."
The student-athletes distributed foam fingers, schedule posters, pins and SBC Tournament tickets to the students.
Georgia Southern earned the third seed and a bye and plays #6 Troy Friday, March 10, at 8:30 p.m. ET in the Sun Belt Tournament quarterfinals.
All games of the tournament will be available on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app with Sunday's championship game slated for a national broadcast at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Georgia Southern and Troy split the season series with each winning at home. The Eagles have won three out of four and are 3-3 against the Trojans since joining the Sun Belt. Each of the last seven meetings in the series have been decided by seven points or less.
Georgia Southern features the Sun Belt's top two scorers in sophomores
Ike Smith (19.9 ppg) and
Tookie Brown (17.5 ppg). The Eagles own a 1-2 all-time mark in the Sun Belt Tournament and advanced to the championship game in 2015.
The 2017 Sun Belt Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships are scheduled for a week of March Madness in the Big Easy. New Orleans will once again be home to the two championships that will take place at Lakefront Arena from March 7-12 and ticket books can now be purchased from the Georgia Southern ticket office.
