Men's Tennis continues hot streak at home improving record to 10-0
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Eagles continued their success at home improving their season record to 13-5, as well as remaining undefeated at home with a perfect 10-0 record. The blue and white will have Sunday off before returning to the courts for the final time at home until April 15th, which is scheduled as Senior Day for the Eagles. The next match is scheduled for Monday March 6th, at 3:00 PM. Come out and support your Eagles at the Wallis Tennis Center.
"We will have a day of rest and then we will take on ECU. We are expecting a battle." Head coach Sander Koning said.
KENNESAW STATE – The early half of Saturday's doubleheader had the Eagles facing off against the Kennesaw State Owls. Prior to the match former tennis Alumni and current Georgia Southern student-athletes were recognized as part of the GATA game. The blue and white also set a new attendance record for the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Owls after Christian Kerrigan and Diego Finkelstein made quick work of their opponents in doubles play. With the early lead heading into singles play the Eagles kept the pressure up taking the first set on three of the six courts. Every singles match would go to a third set with the Eagles taking control and defeating Kennesaw 5-2. JC Alcala would clinch the match for the Eagles winning eight of the final nine points played in his match.
"We came out with a lot of energy today," said head coach Sander Koning. "We were able to make quick work and win the doubles point. The crowd was awesome and really helped our team today. In singles, we played well and like previous years it was a battle. Kennesaw is well coached and they keep fighting. We just had a little bit more in the tank and were able to pull this one out. I am very pleased how JC finished his match. He had his struggles during the match, but at the end he decided he was going to play on his terms and he ended up winning eight of the last nine points because of it."
