Eagles Win in Extra Innings Over EKU, 4-3

Wilson’s big double in the ninth propels GS to victory
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team rallied twice in extra innings to down Eastern Kentucky 4-3 in nine innings Friday night on the opening day of the Eagle Classic. Shelby Wilson launched a two-RBI double to the gap to tie it up and then Lydia Witkowski reached on an error to plate the winning run in dramatic fashion.
Both teams had chances in regulation, but neither could get it done, sending the game to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, EKU got its run on a close play at home and then in the bottom of the frame, Mekhia Freeman's infield single plated pinch runner Haley Carter to tie it up. The Eagles had the bases loaded, but couldn't get the winner.
In the ninth inning, the Colonels got a run on a single and on the play, an error allowed a second run to make it 3-1. The Eagles didn't give up, though, as Alesha Mann led off with a single and she, along with pinch runner Macy Weeks, scored on Wilson's double off the wall to tie it back up. After two strikeouts and with Wilson standing 60 feet away, Witkowski hit a slow roller to shortstop. She hustled down the line to make it close and first baseman Rachel Minogue bobbled the ball, allowing Wilson to score the winning run.
Morgan Robinson and Alesha Mann led the way at the plate with two hits apiece while Emily Snider, Wilson and Freeman each had one.
Dixie Raley (W, 5-5) kept the Eagles in it, constantly wiggling out of jams. The sophomore allowed three runs (none earned and all scored in extra innings) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
QUOTABLES
"I'm just really proud of this team," said head coach Annie Smith. "We fought through a couple of games like this last weekend and we did it again tonight. They're starting to believe in themselves and I like how they compete. Our defense was much better tonight, we got some timely hits from our freshmen and Dixie kept us in it by getting some ground outs and pop ups at key times. We got the runs when we needed them and I'm just really happy that we were able to come away with this win."
UP NEXT:
The Eagles (7-8) will return to action on Saturday, taking on Marshall at 3:30 p.m., followed by South Carolina State at 5:30 p.m.
