The Eagles travel to the Georgia Challenge in Athens this Thursday and Friday, where they face in-state opponents Kennesaw State, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
The Eagles are 2-0 all-time against Kennesaw State, 0-13 against Georgia and 0-6 against Georgia Tech.
Georgia Southern opened its 31st season of volleyball by going 2-2 in four matches at the Florida Atlantic Invitational last weekend. The Eagles defeated Binghamton (3-0) and Bethune-Cookman (3-0) and fell to Stetson (2-3) and FAU (0-3).
Three juniors who received medical redshirts last season, Alex Beecher, Crysten Curry and Katie Bange, returned to the lineup.
Beecher was named to the all-tournament team along with sophomore Megan Chevalier. Beecher recorded 30 digs against Stetson, the 23rd time in her career she has posted 20-plus digs in a match and the third time she has tallied 30-plus digs.
Senior setter Kat Minnerly ranks fifth on the school's career assist list, 881 shy of third, and is six matches away from playing in 100 for her career. Beecher ranks sixth in career digs, 474 shy of the school record. Curry is eighth in career blocks with 241.
The Eagles host 13 home matches this season, beginning Fri., Sept. 11, against Tennessee State. That's the first match of the Eagles' home tournament, which features four teams and eight contests, and begins a stretch of eight straight home matches. New this year - season passes for volleyball now earn Eagle fans priority points for adult passes are available for $20 and youth passes are only $10. Volleyball season passes grant access to all thirteen home matches for a savings of over 65 percent when compared to purchasing single-game tickets.
Georgia Southern will host the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Hanner Fieldhouse Sept. 20-22. The top-8 teams will battle for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It's the first time the Eagles are hosting their conference tournament since 2005, when Georgia Southern hosted the Southern Conference Championship in Hanner.
