Men’s Tennis Announces Recruiting Class

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern men's tennis coach Sander Koning announced today that Mathaus Spiering (Sinop-Mato Grosso, Brazil), Marvin Spiering (Sinop-Mato Grosso, Brazil), Evan Pelavin (Alpharetta, Ga.), Adam Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Andre Johnson (Boulder, Colo.) have joined the program for 2015-16.
"Overall, I believe we have a very good recruiting class that will challenge the returning players, and it will result in this team reaching new heights on and off the tennis court," said Koning.
Mathaus Spiering transfers to Georgia Southern from Division II Harding University and will be a sophomore in eligibility. He led Harding with a 19-3 singles record, including 14-2 in dual matches, 5-1 in tournaments, and 2-1 in GAC matches, and won 9-of-11 matches against regionally-ranked opponents and 2-of-3 matches against nationally-ranked opponents last season. Spiering concluded the campaign ranked No. 5 in the ITA Central Region Singles Rankings and advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Central Region Tournament. He also compiled a 10-10 doubles record.
Koning on Mathaus Spiering: "Mathaus has proven himself on the D-II level. He played high in the lineup and was very successful. He is a very ambitious young man, and he will bring some great experience to this relatively young team. I am looking forward to working with him."
Marvin Spiering, the younger brother of Mathaus, achieved a national ranking of 92nd in Brazil and a high of 385 in the ITF ranking. He made it to the second round of the main draw at Copa Gerdau and was a semifinalist of Pascuas Bowl in Paraguay. He was a quarterfinalist of Copa Guga in Florianópolis, Brazil, and Copa Santa Catarina in Itajaí, Brazil.
Koning on Marvin Spiering: "Marvin has played a lot of ITF junior tournaments, and his experience on that level will help the team. I like his enthusiasm for the game, and he is very eager to be a better player. I believe his desire and passion will challenge many of our players, and he will help this team reach a higher level."
Andre Johnson reached a national junior ranking of 74 and as high as third in Florida. He qualified and advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw of the Eddie Herr International Junior Championships.
Koning on Johnson: "Andre was our first commitment for this year. He is a hard worker and a disciplined young man. Outside of tennis, he already has accomplished many milestones, and he wants to reach new ones at Georgia Southern on and off the court. I am very excited to have him join the team and be an immediate contributor."
Pelavin is ranked fourth in the state in his class and achieved a national ranking of 160. He won state tournaments in South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee and advanced to the hard court nationals in Tucson, Arizona.
Koning on Pelavin: "Evan is a very competitive young man. He has dedicated himself to get back on a higher level after having some physical problems. He will be a force to be reckoned with."
Brown advanced to the fourth round of main draw at the Southern Closed, was a finalist at three Southern 3s and made the consolation semifinals of the closed regional. He ranked between 40-50 in the state in his junior career.
Koning on Brown: "Adam will bring some Georgia pride to this team. Together with Evan, he will bring the intangible passion of being from this great state and have the innate motivation to represent it to the best of their ability."
