STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern baseball team continues a four-game homestand against Sun Belt Conference foe ULM.
The Eagles (24-17, 14-7) are coming off a weekend series sweep of the UALR Trojans and a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to #20 College of Charleston on Tuesday.
GS will face its third-straight former conference foe in the Warhawks (20-21, 7-11). The two teams were conference members in the TAAC and met three times on the diamond with the Eagles holding a 2-1 advantage.
GS stands in second place in the Sun Belt Conference after winning five of their seven league series with a pair of sweeps over Appalachian State and UALR.
The Eagles are seeking their first regular season conference title since 2001, Head Coach Rodney Hennon's second season at the helm of the program, and last finished in second place in conference play in 2009.
The 2009 squad went 42-17, won the Southern Conference Tournament and was a number two seed at the Fullerton Regional.
Coach Hennon has led the Eagles to a regular season title or second place finish six times in his career.
The Eagles are hitting .274 as a squad. Aaron Mizell continues to hit and holds an 11 game hit streak and a 21 game reached base streak. The senior leads the team with a .329 batting average and ranks second in the Sun Belt with 12 home runs.
Evan Challenger leads a pitching staff that has posted the fourth-best ERA (3.89) in the conference. Challenger leads the Sun Belt with a 1.19 ERA and is a perfect 4-0 on the year with his last loss coming in 2013.
Challenger leads a rotation that has combined to allow just 37 runs over 140.1 innings. Senior righthander Tripp Sheppard (4-2, 2.91 ERA) and freshman lefthander Connor Simmons (2-3, 3.29 ERA) round out the weekend rotation.
Simmons bounced back after going just an inning plus against UT Arlington to hold UALR to one run over six solid innings.
The Warhawks are hitting .272 as a squad and are led by Kodie Tidwell. Tidwell is hitting .336 with a team-best 15 doubles and 29 runs scored.
ULM comes into the weekend on the outside looking in of the Sun Belt Tournament. The Warhawks currently sit in 9th place and will be looking to improve their standing with a series win.
Head Coach Bruce Peddie will send righthander Alex Hermeling (3-5, 3.58 ER) to the mound on Friday night, and lefthander Trey Setzer (5-2, 3.05 ERA) on Saturday. The pitching staff holds a 3.79 ERA as a squad.
Hermeling shut out Arkansas State for six innings before allowing single runs in the seventh and eighth innings last weekend. The junior picked up his third win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Arkansas State.
