Baseball Completes Season Series with Mercer Wednesday

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern baseball team and the Mercer Bears will meet on the diamond for the 163rd time on Wednesday in Macon, Ga.
The Eagles (21-16), who stand in second place in the Sun Belt Conference after winning their second-straight Sun Belt Conference series over the UT Arlington Mavericks, will face the Bears (22-15) before heading to UALR for a three-game series this weekend.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Claude Smith Field and will air on the Georgia Southern Radio Network.
Georgia Southern is 4-3 against teams from the state of Georgia this year and holds wins over #18 Georgia and Kennesaw State. The Eagles are 2-8 in mid-week games this season.
GS is hitting .270 as a squad and is tied with Georgia State for the lead in home runs with 31. Chase Griffin leads the team with a .322 batting average and a team best 46 hits. Aaron Mizell is second on the squad with a .310 average and has 21 extra base hits including 10 home runs.
The pitching staff ranks fourth in the conference with a 3.89 ERA. Evan Challenger continues to impress in the Friday night role and is 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA in eight starts this season. Jason Richman is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 23 games out of the bullpen.
Freshman lefthander Connor Simmons will get the start on Wednesday and will pitch an inning or two in a tune-up for his start on Sunday in Little Rock, Ark.
Simmons (1-3, 3.60 ERA) is looking to get back on track after allowing five runs over an inning on Sunday against the Mavericks. The freshman opened conference play with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a start against Appalachian State.
Mercer swept a pair of mid-week games against Georgia and is off to a 9-3 start in Southern Conference play.
The Bears are coming off of a 2-2 week, which included a series win over Western Carolina and a 4-3 loss at Georgia Tech. The Bears will host Georgia State on Tuesday before welcoming in the Eagles.
Mercer is hitting .267 as a squad. Kyle Lewis leads the team with a .371 batting average, 12 doubles and 10 home runs.
